Former Lumberjack Lomong Defends Title at USA Championships
EUGENE, Ore. – Former Lumberjack Olympian Lopez Lomong will defend his title at the 2011 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field this weekend. Lomong is scheduled to run in the 1,500m semifinals on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. The final is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
Lomong has been training in Flagstaff recently after competing in both New York and Oregon.
Lomong is the two-time defending USA Outdoor 1,500m champion. He won his first career USA Outdoor title when he finished first in the men’s 1,500 at the 2009 USA Outdoor Championships in 3:41.68. Later that summer he finished eighth in the final at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin, Germany. He ended the 2009 season after posting personal bests in both the 1,500m (3:32.94) and mile (3:53.35).
Lomong captured his second consecutive USA Outdoor 1,500mm title at the 2010 USA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, with his time of 3:50.83. Later that summer he lowered his 1,500m personal best in Monaco when he stopped the clocks in 3:32.20 on July 22, which was the second-fastest time in that event by an American that year.
Lopez, who was the flag bearer for the United States Friday in the Parade of Nations at the Opening Ceremonies for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, was a two-time National Champion (1,500m, Outdoors, 2007; 3,000m., Indoors, 2007), five-time All-American, 12-time Big Sky Conference individual champion and holder of five school records at Northern Arizona. He competed for cross country from 2005-07 and the track and field for the 2006-07 seasons.
