Former Lumberjack Lomong Advances in 1,500 at Worlds
BERLIN – Former Northern
Arizona All-American Lopez Lomong advanced in the preliminary
rounds of the 1,500-meters at the 2009 IAAF World
Championships Saturday. Lomong finished third in the third heat
in a time of 3:44.89 qualifying to the semifinals set for 11:10
a.m. Arizona time on Monday.
Lomong will race in the first heat with the top five finishers
plus next two top two times advancing from the two heats. The
finals will be contested Wednesday, August 19.
Lomong qualified for the championships when he won the 1,500
meters at the USA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.
back in June.
Lomong represented the United States at the 2008 Beijing Olympics,
reaching the semifinals in the 1500m. He was also the flag bearer
for the United States in the Opening Ceremonies.
For the Lumberjacks, Lomong was a two-time National Champion
(1,500m, Outdoors, 2007; 3,000m., Indoors, 2007), five-time
All-American, 12-time Big Sky Conference individual champion and
holder of five school records at Northern Arizona University. He
competed for cross country from 2005-07 and the track and field for
the 2006-07 seasons.
