Lomong Wins USA Outdoor 1,500m for Second Consecutive Year
DES MOINES, Iowa – Former Lumberjack Lopez Lomong won his second consecutive title in the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 1,500-meters in a winning time of 3:50.83 at Drake Stadium Sunday.
“The kick is starting to come around pretty well,” said Lomong. “This is my third run of the season. Things are starting to sharpen up a bit. I am really looking forward to the upcoming season, especially the European season. “
Lomong defeated Leonel Manzano, who he defeated for the 2007 NCAA title in the same event.
“Leo is great, great guy, great runner, great kicker,” said Lomong after the race.” I just wanted to watch him. Everyone out there is a tough customer. I have to treat anyone that is tough and anyone can strike at anytime."
Lopez was a two-time National Champion (1,500m, Outdoors, 2007; 3,000m., Indoors, 2007), five-time All-American, 12-time Big Sky Conference individual champion and holder of five school records at Northern Arizona. He competed for the cross country team from 2005-07 and the track and field program for the 2006-07 seasons.
