Lumberjacks Dominate Big Sky Weekly Awards

OGDEN, Utah – It was quite a weekend for three student-athletes from the Northern Arizona track and field team. Senior Nell Rojas, junior Andres Rossini and sophomore Diego Estrada were awarded Big Sky Athlete of the Week Awards by the Big Sky Conference Tuesday afternoon for their solid performances at the Double Dual and the Payton Jordan Stanford Invitational.

At the Double Dual on the campus of the University of Arizona, Rossini launched a career best throw of 57.57m (188-10) to move into eighth place on the Big Sky all-time discus list. The Argentina native's throw also improves his rank on the national level. He now holds the ninth best throw in the West Region, and sits at No. 13 in the nation.

It was a stellar weekend at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational on the campus of Stanford for the Lumberjacks.

Estrada's career-best time of 28:40.19 in the 10,000-meter run, moved him into sixth place on the Big Sky all-time list in the event. Already possessing a top-20 regional time in the 5,000-meter run, Estrada's 10K mark gives him the sixth-best time in the West Region, and eighth-best in the nation.

Competing in her second steeplechase of the season, Rojas improved upon her season-best time of 10:34 when she crossed the stripe in a Big Sky-leading time of 10:30.56. She continues to climb the national list as well, sitting at No. 19 in the region and 34th in the country.

All three winners received the conference award for the first time this season.

With the regular season concluded, the Lumberjacks are preparing for the Big Sky Outdoor Championships in Ogden, Utah from May 12-15.

DID YOU KNOW?…The Lumberjacks had 11 of the 15 intercollegiate teams record a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher led by women’s soccer at 3.42. Women’s basketball was close behind at 3.39, followed by women’s cross country (3.35), women’s golf (3.29), swimming and diving (3.25) volleyball (3.22) and men’s cross country (3.19).
