Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season in Tempe
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona track and field team opens its 2010 outdoor campaign this weekend as it competes in the Baldy Castillo Invitational hosted by Arizona State. This marks the first of four outdoor meets that the Lumberjacks will take part in down in Tempe, Ariz.
“Its a chance for us to get down to the warm weather of Tempe after our student-athletes had a nice week off from classes for spring break,” Interim Director of Track and Field & Cross Country Eric Heins said about the opening meet. “These early meets are always good to attend so you can gauge how the season will progress.”
The two-day meet opens Friday afternoon with the men’s and women’s weight throw beginning at 1:00 p.m. PDT. The meet resumes Saturday afternoon with the rest of the events beginning at 4:00 p.m.
This will be the first outdoor event for the Lumberjacks to collect Big Sky qualifying marks for the conference outdoor championships that will be held from May 12-15 on the campus of Weber State.
NAU’s squad traveling to the invite will include sprinters, jumpers, hurdlers and throwers. Junior Eric Lynch and sophomore Darius Terry will be the lone distance runners to make the trip for the Lumberjacks.
Over a dozen collegiate teams will be represented at the meet, including Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.
