McNeill Honored by Big Sky; Lumberjacks ranked No. 19

OGDEN, Utah – David McNeill of the Northern Arizona track and field team was awarded the Big Sky Track Athlete of the Week once again by the conference Tuesday afternoon. This marks the third time McNeill has taken home the award this season.

The Australian native was rewarded for his record-breaking 5,000-meter time of 13:39.32 at the NAU Tune Up this past Friday. It marked the second school record that McNeill had broken in less then a week after he shattered Lopez Lomong’s 3,000m mark at the Husky Classic on Feb. 13.

McNeill is now at the top of the NCAA Indoor performance list with both his 3k and 5k marks, and will be heading to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete for a national championship on March 12-13.

Before the indoor national championships, McNeill and his teammates head to Bozeman, Mont., to compete in the Big Sky Indoor Championships this Friday and Saturday.

NAU also learned Tuesday that the men’s squad jumped from No. 30 up to No 19 in the latest USTFCCCA top-25 rankings. McNeill’s latest top mark gave the Lumberjacks 22.29 points, thus vaulting them into the top-25 poll. Both the men’s and women’s teams are ranked fourth in the Mountain Region after the women’s squad moved up two spots.
