Friday Night Challenge Postponed Until Saturday Due to Weather
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Friday Night Challenge hosted by
the Northern Arizona track and field team has been postponed until
Saturday at 1130 a.m. due to
the winter weather that has slammed Flagstaff this week. The meet
will take place inside the Walkup Skydome.
The field consists of six teams including in-state rival Arizona
State, Big Sky-membe
r Portland State, Southern Utah, Cal State Bakersfield and Cal
State Fullerton.
Interim Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Eric Heins
is looking forward to the great competition coming into Flagstaff
for the team-scoring meet.
“ This meet is always fun because it is a team scoring. The
teams coming in are all solid, and it makes for a great atmosphere
all-around. It is one of those meets that creates a competitive
atmosphere in all the events because some teams are better in
different areas.“
This will be the first team-scoring meet of the season for
NAU.
Last Saturday in the first meet of 2010, the Lumberjacks collected
four more Big Sky qualifiers to bring their total up to 17, and saw
an indoor track and field school record broken.
Seniors Derrick Jackson (6.98) and Annie Skordas (7.77) both
qualified for the Big Sky Indoor Championships in the 60m dash. The
qualifying time for Skordas was also a personal record.
Mesa Community College transfer Josh DeKonty, also qualified for
the championships with his 6-6.75 mark in the high jump, and senior
thrower Arshiya Hoseyni came up with a qualifying mark in the shot
put on her second attempt of the day (14.31m, 46-11.5).
The record-breaking performance last Saturday belonged to senior
thrower Javier Villarreal. The Eloy, Ariz., native came up with a
throw of 18.55m (60-10.5) to break the 20-year-old school record
previously held by Kent Larson (60-6.5). The throw also gave
Villarreal an NCAA provisional mark for the indoor championships.
