Lumberjacks Collect Three Indoor Athletes of the Week Awards
OGDEN, Utah - The Northern Arizona track and field team brought
in the New Year by collecting three out of four Big Sky Indoor
Track Athletes of the Week awards Wednesday afternoon. Senior
Javier Villarreal, junior Amber Anderson and freshman Matt
Holtfrerich all took home the weekly accolades for their strong
efforts in the Blue, Gold, and Red Open on Dec. 3 at NAU.
Anderson landed the women’s field athlete of the week award
for her strong efforts in the long jump and triple jump events. Her
marks of 6.09m (19-11) in the long jump, and 12.2m (40-0) in the
triple jump nearly hit provisional marks for the NCAA Indoor
Championships.
The men’s track athlete of the week award belonged to
Holtfrerich, who clocked a 22.21 finish in the 200m dash. It was
the Glendale, Ariz., freshman’s first collegiate meet, and
second career race.
No stranger to the men’s field athlete of the week award,
Villarreal collected the weekly honor after a booming throw in the
shot put at 16.75m (54-11). The Eloy, Ariz., native also collected
an outstanding mark in the weight throw (16.52m, 54-2).
All of the award winners from NAU posted Big Sky Indoor
Championship qualifying marks at the early-December meet.
The Lumberjacks will hold their first indoor meet of 2010 on Jan.
16 when they host the Lumberjack Invitational at the J. Lawrence
Walkup Skydome. The meet begins promptly at 7:45 a.m. MST.
Admission for adults is $5.00, and $2.00 for children.
