OGDEN, Utah – The NAU Men's Tennis program adds another Big Sky Player of the Week this season in sophomore Ruben Montano, who was named today, March 28, in his second season of play in blue and gold. Montano is the third Lumberjack this season to receive the honor along with Tim Handel and Lucas Taylor. From Santa Cruz, Bolivia, Montano is currently on a five-match winning streak competing at the No. 5 position for the 'Jacks.
Montano falls closely behind No. 13 Handel in leading the Lumberjacks in the win column. Currently, Montano is 9-5 overall in doubles and 5-0 in conference after pairing with Handel, Sebastian Eguez and Justin Bac. With Handel, Montano has gone undefeated in doubles and leads the Lumberjacks at 7-0. In singles, the sophomore is 8-6 overall and 5-1 conference, just one win behind his doubles partner.
This weekend Montano did not drop a set across doubles and singles, clinching both matches to help the 'Jacks remain the only undefeated team in the conference. Against Weber State, Montano and Handel won 6-4 against Michiel van Schoor and Kris van Wyk. Then Montano went on to beat Van Schoor again in a tough 6-3, 7-6(11-9) match to help clinch a 4-3 win. Against Idaho State, Montano and Handel bested Bjorn Scheepbouwer and Keegan Sullivan 6-1. Then Montano went on to overpower Haseeb Khan 6-3, 6-2 in singles to clinch a 7-0 sweep.
This is Montano's first career Big Sky Player of the Week honor after going 10-13 overall in singles last season and finishing 6-8 in doubles with Handel. Montano and the Lumberjacks will travel to Nevada and Sacramento State this weekend, April 1 and 2, respectively. Both matches are set for 11 a.m.
