OGDEN, Utah – Sophomore Tim Handel was named the Big Sky Player of the Week today, March 8, in his second season of action for Northern Arizona University men's tennis. Ranked No. 18 in the region, Handel is on a five-match winning streak and one of the two leaders in the win column for the Lumberjacks.
A Reutlingen, Germany native, Handel competes at the No. 1 position for the 'Jacks. He is currently behind reigning Big Sky Player of the Week Lucas Taylor leading the team in singles wins with six. This last weekend, Handel opened up in conference play with two victories over Montana and Montana State. Against Montana, he faced Yannick Schmidl in singles winning 6-4, 6-2 and paired with Ruben Montano in doubles, but went unfinished. The following day, Handel helped NAU to their fourth straight win over Montana State by tying the score after losing in doubles. Handel went up against Montana State's Kellen Bates winning 6-4, 6-3. Handel is 6-4 in singles overall and 4-3 in doubles overall. After going 2-3 with doubles partner Lucas Taylor, Handel was then paired with Ruben Montano for conference. The pair is currently undefeated.
Handel earned an All-Big Sky First Team selection and his first career Big Sky Player of the Week honor last season after playing No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles all year. Handel and the Lumberjacks will travel to Nevada to start a series of matches on the road and at home. They will first compete against UNLV March 12 at noon before competing against New Mexico, Idaho, UC Riverside and Southern Utah.
