SEDONA, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team played its first home match of the season against Big Sky Conference opponent Montana State. The match was moved to Enchantment Resort in Sedona due to weather conditions in Flagstaff and the Lumberjacks swept the Bobcats for the 4-0 victory and Northern Arizona's first win in the Big Sky this season.
"Today was really a great day for us," said head coach Ki Kroll. "If we bring this kind of intensity to every match, I have a feeling that we will do very well. We are going to have to keep playing hard and keep this up."
Northern Arizona came out of the gates hot taking two of three doubles matches to take the early 1-0 lead over the Bobcats. The Lumberjacks' No. 3 team, Alan Barrios and Trevor Unger got the Lumberjacks first win of the match with an 8-5 win over Kenny Dodd and Javier Morillas.
The winning continued for Northern Arizona as Kester Black and Fabio Tomasetti played stellar as the No. 1 duo and pulled off an 8-4 win over Diego Campos and Markus Schleuter to clinch the doubles point for Northern Arizona.
"Everybody performed very well today because our intensity picked up," said Tomasetti. "I felt pretty confident today in doubles with Kester and I am glad we were able to come away with a win."
The No. 2 team, Alexandre Locci and Jordan Gobatie, were up 6-5 in their match against Niklas Brandes and Harry James but the match was stopped since Northern Arizona had already clinched the doubles point.
"This is the best doubles we have played all season," said Kroll. "We came out to play and with a few new matchups today they came together and hopefully we can keep it going."
There were only four singles matches played today between the Lumberjacks and Montana State and Northern Arizona came away with three wins to bring home the victory for the Lumberjacks.
The first singles win came from Tomasetti who was able to take care of his opponent, Markus Schleuter, 6-0, 6-4 to put NAU up 2-0 in the match. The Lumberjacks second win came from Black at the No. 4 position and Black was able to defeat Diego Campos 7-5, 6-2. Alexandre Locci sealed the win for the Lumberjacks in a tough match at the No. 2 position. Locci took the first set 6-2 over Javier Morillas and Locci clinched the win for the Lumberjacks in a tough 7-5 second set.
The Lumberjacks were able to pull the upset over Montana State who was picked to finish third in the Big Sky this season and the Bobcats were on a two-match winning streak and had not been defeated in the Big Sky this season.
Northern Arizona will look to carry this momentum into Saturday's home match against North Dakota. Saturday's match will take place at Continental Country Club at 2 p.m. after the NAU women's tennis team finishes play.
