ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team began its three-match road trip on Friday facing the University of New Mexico who went into today's match ranked as the 72nd best team in the nation. The Lobos played like one of the top teams in the nation as they handed the Lumberjacks a 7-0 loss.
"I thought we played a competitive match today," said head coach Ki Kroll. "New Mexico is a very tough team so we need to learn from this and improve tomorrow when we face New Mexico State tomorrow."
The Lumberjacks started out today's match dropping the doubles point with both matches resulting in a 6-2 loss. In singles play, the Lumberjacks were able to compete very well against a nationally ranked opponent and forced two matches to three sets.
Tomasetti dropped his first set to New Mexico's James Hignett 6-4 but responded by taking the second set 5-6. Tomasetti was not able to pull out the win in the third and final set losing 1-0. Black was able to come back after losing his first set to force a third set against the Lobos' Andrew Van Der Vyver but Black eventually fell to Van Der Vyver 6-0 in the third set.
The Lumberjacks will now travel to Lac Cruces, N.M. where they will finish their three-match road trip against New Mexico State and Missouri Kansas City. Northern Arizona will resume play tomorrow against New Mexico State at 1 p.m.
