LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team finished its first day the ITA Mountain Region Championships in Las Vegas, Nev. and junior Jordan Gobatie shined for the Lumberjacks.
The junior from Riverside, Calif. went 2-0 on Wednesday in singles play defeating Eric Marbach from Denver University and Jeremy Bourgeois from BYU by a score of 7-5, 3-6 and 6-2.
"Jordan played solid tennis today," said head coach Ki Kroll. "Jordan and our entire team represented NAU very well. We competed well and I am very happy with our gradual progress."
Gobatie will now face Tamas Batyi from UNLV on Thursday, Oct. 17 in the round of 32.
Northern Arizona junior Kester Black also had a good start to his tournament as he went 1-1 in singles play defeating Big Sky Conference opponent Peter Mimnagh-Fleming from the University of Montana 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles play, Black and Fabio Tomasetti were paired up and dropped their first match to Jeremy Bourgeois and Juan Canales from BYU. Gobatie and Alexandre Locci shared the court together and also dropped their first match to Rodolfo Juaregui and Hayden Sabatka from the University of New Mexico in a tough 8-5 match.
