Men's Tennis Falls to Weber State, 5-2
SEDONA, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team earned a hard-fought doubles point and seized the early momentum from Weber State, but the Wildcats took it right back and handed the Lumberjacks a 5-2 defeat on Saturday at the Enchantment Resort. The Lumberjacks will head into their season finale on Sunday with at 4-18 and 1-8 in the conference.
"Unfortunately it's the same old story for us; win the doubles point and can't get it going in singles or vice-versa," said director of tennis Kim Bruno. "Hopefully tomorrow we can end the season strong."
The Lumberjacks got off to a great start with a doubles win over the Wildcats. Senior Patrick Schimmelbauer and junior Dominic Bermudez earned the first doubles win of the day, 8-4, at No. 1, but Weber State evened up doubles play with a win at No. 3. Needing to win at the No. 2 position, senior Robert Martin and sophomore Trevor Unger answered the call as they edged out Todd Fought and Sanjay Goswami. In a match that was tight from the first serve, the Wildcats' pair tied the match at 7-7. Martin and Unger would pull out the next two sets and clinched the doubles point in NAU's favor with a 9-7 win.
However, NAU was unable to capitalize on the momentum as Weber State stole it at the beginning of singles play. The Wildcats won at No. 3, 4 and 2 to open singles competition and stood within one win of taking the match at 3-1. Schimmelbauer briefly halted the Wildcats' run with an impressive win at No. 1. Schimmelbauer, playing in his second to last match of his career, handed Jakub Gewert a 6-3, 6-3 loss and brought NAU back to within a point at 3-2.
The Lumberjacks could not win out though as they needed to as the Wildcats won in straight-sets at No. 5 and 6 to close out the match.
NAU concludes its season on Sunday at 9 a.m. at Enchantment Resort against Portland State. The match, originally scheduled for a 10 a.m. start, will be moved up an hour to accommodate the Vikings' travel plans. It will be Senior Day for the Lumberjacks as the match will serve as the final career matches for the team's three seniors – Schimmelbauer, Robert Martin and Shaun Waters.
