FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team may have been eliminated from postseason contention last week, but the Lumberjacks will look to finish the season strong beginning this Saturday when they host Southern Utah in Sedona. The match will be played at Enchantment Resort at 2 p.m.
"We're in a similar situation with Southern Utah right now and this is a match that we want to get out and win," said director of tennis Kim Bruno. "Every time we step on the court we've been in a position to win and hopefully things fall our way this weekend. There's no question we want to try and edge out teams because we're not throwing in the towel because we're not making the tournament."
The Lumberjacks (3-17, 0-7 Big Sky) continued to have mixed results last weekend on the road at Montana State and Montana. While both were ultimately defeats, NAU was in both matches particularly in its 5-2 loss to Montana State. The Lumberjacks' improved doubles play was on display again against the Bobcats as they took the doubles point. Senior Robert Martin and sophomore Trevor Unger picked up their fifth doubles win of the season, second-best on the team, before senior Patrick Schimmelbauer and junior Dominic Bermudez notched their team-best ninth doubles win at No. 2 in a tiebreak to clinch the doubles point. Schimmelbauer and Bermudez's nine doubles victories are tied for fourth most in the conference.
NAU only managed two singles wins, but both were gritty three-set victories. Sophomore Kester Black won versus Montana State and Bermudez won versus Montana as both players battled back from first set losses in their respective matches.
Martin continues to lead the Lumberjacks in singles with nine wins. Bermudez and Black are second and third behind Martin with eight and seven victories respectively.
Southern Utah has found life in the Big Sky Conference rough in its inaugural season as the Thunderbirds enter Saturday's match 0-10 overall, 0-6 in the conference. All 10 of their losses have been 7-0 blanks and the team has been shut out of the win column in both singles and doubles play thus far.
NAU and Southern Utah will meet for the first time on Saturday.
Enchantment Resort in Sedona, located at 525 Boynton Canyon Road, will be the home of both NAU tennis programs throughout the remainder of the season. Attendance and parking is free for all in attendance. For more information, refer to the flyer in the link above. Live scoring will be available for Saturday's match here.
