Men's Tennis Snaps Skid, Blanks St. Cloud State, 9-0
SARTELL, Minn. – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team swept its way through St. Cloud State on Friday to snap its eight-match losing streak, 9-0, at the Fitness Evolution Tennis Center. The Lumberjacks' first victory since a 4-2 win over Western New Mexico on Feb. 3 moved their record to 3-12 overall and gives them some momentum heading into their Big Sky contest against North Dakota on Saturday.
"The guys played really well and really took care of business," said men's tennis assistant coach Joseph Heckley. "They capitalized on big points and played consistent. It all started with winning the doubles point. This gives us confidence going into our conference match tomorrow."
For the third time in five matches, the Lumberjacks jumped out of the gate with a doubles point win. The No. 2 NAU pair of senior Patrick Schimmelbauer and junior Dominic Bermudez claimed an easy 8-1 win over Matheus Aching and Jeremy Thompson to improve to a team-best 5-1 in doubles play. The two remaining Lumberjack doubles teams recorded identical 8-3 victories to give the team their second sweep of doubles play of the season and coincidentally their first since their Western New Mexico victory.
Leading the charge in singles play were senior Shaun Waters and sophomore Kester Black, who both notched easy 6-0, 6-1 wins at No. 2 and 4 singles respectively. Schimmelbauer and Bermudez also notched straight-set wins of their own at the No. 1 and 3 positions respectively before senior Robert Martin and sophomore Trevor Unger closed out the match with one pro set wins at the final two spots.
The Lumberjacks' nine-match blanking of the Huskies without dropping a match in both doubles play and singles play was the team's first such team win since their 7-0 home win over Northern Colorado on April 2, 2011.
With its losing skid in the rear view mirror, NAU hopes to make it two in a row on Saturday and pick up its first conference win of the season in the process when they travel to Grand Forks, N.D. to play North Dakota. UND in its first season in the Big Sky Conference is 1-7 overall and 0-4 in conference play. The Lumberjacks are 0-2 in the conference. Play will start at 7 a.m. at UND's Center Court Fitness Club.
