Men's Tennis Comes Up Short at New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team received another singles victory from sophomore Dominic Bermudez, one of two singles wins for the Lumberjacks on Saturday, but dropped a 5-2 decision to New Mexico State. After losing the doubles point, NAU took the first set in five of the six singles yet were unable to snap their five-match losing skid.

"We put in yourselves in situations to win and we did compete better than we did at home (last week)," said director of tennis Kim Bruno. "We just have to keep moving forward. Tomorrow is a new day and if we compete as well as we did today, we'll come up with a win."

The home team clinched the doubles point by winning at No. 1 and 3 to begin Saturday's play. The Aggies' duo of Luis Ramirez and Marc Westgate knocked off freshman Trevor Unger and junior Shaun Waters, 8-4, at No. 1 and Eduardo Cabrita and Matej Stakne followed with an 8-6 victory over junior Robert Martin and senior Robin Pezzutto at No. 3. The Lumberjacks would not be shut out of doubles play though as sophomore Dominic Bermudez and junior Patrick Schimmelbauer would rally for an 8-6 victory at the No. 2 spot for the pair's fourth win of the spring.

However, despite falling behind in the match 1-0, the Lumberjacks responded strongly in singles play. At the No. 1 through 5 spots, the Lumberjacks claimed first set victories and appeared to be on their way to clinching their first win since March 17. Pezzutto evened the team score by defeating Westgate at the top singles position, 6-1, 6-2.

The Aggies claimed a win at No. 6, but Bermudez knotted up the match yet again with a three-set victory, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, at No. 3. Including Bermudez's match, the final four singles went into a third set, but unfortunately for the Lumberjacks, they dropped the last three singles at No. 5, 2 and 4.

Bermudez won his second singles match of the weekend following his win on Friday against New Mexico and has now won six consecutive matches and seven of his last eight. His win on Saturday was his tenth of the season and eclipses his total from his freshman year last season with five team matches to go this spring.

The Lumberjacks will take another crack at snapping their losing streak with their final match of the weekend on Sunday. They'll play a neutral site match against UT Arlington at the NMSU Tennis Complex at 8 a.m., as they'll look to improve their 4-13 spring record.
