ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Northern Arizona men's tennis wrapped up play at the UNM Balloon Fiesta Invitational on Sunday with a light playing schedule. Junior Shaun Waters the lone Lumberjack to compete in singles play, defeating the US Air Force Academy's Steven Young, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals of the Flight A consolation. Waters' consolation finals match against New Mexico's Mads Hegelund was not played.
The Lumberjacks also claimed two doubles victories on Sunday. Senior Robin Pezzutto teamed up with Waters to defeat Carlos Bermudez and Frank Chen from the University of Arizona, 8-4 and senior Josh Brown and junior Robert Martin defeated Air Force's Andy Jackson and Ali Rizvi, 8-6. Both matches were in the consolation semifinals, and the finals between the two Lumberjack doubles pairs was not played.
Waters won a team-high three singles matches this weekend, going 3-1 and winning his last three matches after dropping his first. Brown won two singles matches of his own. The Lumberjacks lost their first two doubles matches of the tournament on Friday, but rebounded to win their last five.
