Men’s Tennis Home to Host Portland State on Saturday
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – After opening its season with 11 matches away from Flagstaff, the NAU men's tennis team (2-9) will open both its home and Big Sky schedules on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Flagstaff Athletic Club (FAC) East against Portland State (4-6, 1-2 BSC). The Lumberjacks will host five of their eight conference matches this season in Flagstaff, with Saturday's home opener concluding a doubleheader with the Lumberjack women's tennis team.
After beginning the season with a pair of wins, the Lumberjacks have dropped their last-nine matches, four of which were against nationally ranked opponents. In five seasons hosting its matches in the FAC East, however, NAU has recorded a 13-9 overall record and a 10-5 mark in Big Sky play. Junior Josh Brown leads the team with five singles wins this season at No. 4, 5 and 6, while freshman Dominic Bermudez has notched four wins at No. 3, 4 and 5. The squad has been paced in doubles by senior David Flodberg and junior Robin Pezzutto with a 4-1 season record.
Portland State brings a 4-6 overall record and a 1-2 Big Sky mark to Flagstaff. The Vikings have dropped 4-3 decisions to Sacramento State and Weber State and notched a 7-0 win over Northern Colorado thus far in conference play. Senior Chris Rice leads the squad at No. 1 singles and teams with freshman Roman Margoulis at No. 1 doubles. Northern Arizona is undefeated in seven all-time matches with Portland State.
