GLENDALE, Ariz. – Northern Arizona won the doubles point and claimed three singles wins to get by UC Riverside, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at the Paseo Racquet Club in Glendale. NAU improved to 2-0 on the young season while UC Riverside remained winless at 0-3.
In doubles play, the NAU duo of sophomore Hugo Ramadier and freshman Dominic Bermudez cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 2 while the Highlanders picked up an 8-1 win at No. 3. The doubles point came down to the No. 1 position, where Lumberjack junior Robin Pezzutto and sophomore Patrick Schimmelbauer outlasted UCR's Michael Conroy and Quoc Doan in a tiebreak, 9-8 (8), to give NAU the critical doubles point.
UC Riverside would record singles wins at No. 1 and 2, while at No. 3 Pezzutto rallied for a 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 win over UC Riverside's Austin Andres. Lumberjack senior David Flodberg dropped a three-set decision at No. 4, but at No. 5, Bermudez cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win. The Lumberjacks would clinch the match at No. 6, where junior Josh Brown recorded his first-career dual victory in a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 comeback over Highlander senior Sean Peterson to give NAU the win.
The Lumberjacks will continue their season-opening road trip on Sunday in Las Vegas, facing their first ranked opponent of the season in a 2 p.m. match against No. 66 UNLV.
