Men’s Tennis Opens Year with Busy First Day in Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The defending Big Sky runner-up Northern Arizona men's tennis team began its 2010 Fall season on Friday on the opening day of the New Mexico State Aggie Invitational. The Lumberjacks totaled four doubles wins and three singles victories in the main draws of play on the first of three days of action over the weekend.

In doubles play, the duo of junior Josh Brown and sophomore Patrick Schimmelbauer won three matches on Friday, posting a victory in a play-in match before emerging victorious over a duo of doubles teams from Western New Mexico. The NAU pair of senior David Flodberg and sophomore Hugo Ramadier also picked up a doubles win in the opening round before dropping a match to a pair from Arizona.

In the singles Crimson draw, junior Andrew Reiff rallied for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 over New Mexico's Matt Neeld. Ramadier would earn a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win over Arizona's Jason Zafiro, though both he and Reiff would fall in second-round matches. NAU's only win in the White draw would come for Brown in a 6-4, 6-3 win over New Mexico's Simon Hegelund.

NAU also competed in several back draw matches on Friday that will not be reported until Saturday.

White main draw and back draws begin play at 9 am Saturday followed by Crimson and White main draw action at 11 and wrapping up with Crimson main draw semis and the doubles main draw at 2pm.

DID YOU KNOW... The volleyball team had the best semester GPA at 3.49 in the spring of 2010, followed closely by women's cross country (3.47), women's golf (3.41), soccer (3.38) and women's basketball (3.36). Overall, 11 of the 15 teams had a 3.0 or higher semester GPA.
