Men's Tennis Opens Road Trip With 7-0 Route of Gonzaga
SPOKANE, Wash. – After claiming the doubles point, Northern Arizona won all-six singles matches in a dominant 7-0 victory over Gonzaga late Friday night in Spokane. The win began a regular season ending, four match trip to the Northwest for the Lumberjacks and elevated their season record to 10-8 while Gonzaga dropped to 5-11.
"The scores really don't demonstrate how hard the men played to secure their wins and hone their attitudes," said assistant coach Rich Paulosky. "We reloaded with focus, intensity and commitment to prepare for our upcoming conference foes. The next two matches are going to be battles and must-wins for the guys."
The Bulldogs picked up a win at No. 1 doubles, but NAU would earn wins at No. 2 and 3 to claim the doubles point. Sophomores Andrew Reiff and Robin Pezzutto battled for an 8-6 win at No. 2, while freshmen Hugo Ramadier and Kevin Taylor took an 8-4 victory at No. 3 to give NAU the early point.
The Lumberjacks would dominate singles play in a sweep including four straight-set wins. Reiff was perfect at No. 1 with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Gonzaga's Conor Freeney. Pezzutto was almost as good at No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-1 win while Taylor rolled to a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6. A 6-2, 7-6 win from freshman Patrick Schimmelbauer at No. 3 and three-set wins for NAU at No. 2 and 5 completed a Lumberjack sweep.
Northern Arizona plays its first of two important Big Sky matches over the weekend on Saturday, taking on Eastern Washington at 2 p.m.
