Mens Tennis Adds Nine Wins as Aggie Invitational Concludes
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Junior Robin Pezzutto fell in the final
match of the singles B-draw, but NAU won six other singles matches
and claimed three doubles wins on the final day of the Aggie
Invitational in Las Cruces. The Lumberjacks ended the competition
with a combined 20-11 singles record and a 7-7 doubles mark in
three days of play.
Pezzutto faced John Strahl of Abilene Christian for the title in
the B-draw singles bracket. Strahl rolled to a 6-0 win in the first
set before Pezzutto came back for a 6-2 second-set victory. Strahl
would bounce back with a 6-2 victory in the fourth set to claim the
championship.
In singles consolation play, the Lumberjacks went 6-0 on Sunday
with five straight-set victories. NAU also won three of four
doubles matches on the day, with the easiest win an 8-3 victory for
freshmen Patrick Schimmelbauer and Kevin Taylor.
“Each day we improved our performance on the court and in
return got results,” said head coach Kim Bruno. “It was
a grueling three days and our men’s team toughed it out and
performed well on the last day to leave Las Cruces on a high
note.”
The Lumberjacks will return to New Mexico for their next fall
tournament, participating in the Balloon Fiesta Invitational, at
the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, October 9-11.
