OGDEN, Utah – For the second time in four years, and the fourth time in school history, the Northern Arizona University Athletics Department swept the Big Sky Men's and Women's All-Sports Trophies, announced by the conference office on Monday. The Lumberjacks won a total of seven Big Sky Conference championships during the 2016-17 academic year and also received strong performances from several other programs.
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Among the nearly 5,000 Northern Arizona University graduates this weekend will be 44 Lumberjack student-athletes, who will receive their diplomas during the commencement ceremonies Friday and Saturday in the Walkup Skydome. Along with the 17 fall semester graduates, NAU Athletics will graduate 61 total student-athletes this academic year.
Senior forward Ako Kaluna will be graduating in May with a degree in hotel and restaurant management. The California native played all four years with the men's basketball team and finished as the 29th member of the 1,000-point club.
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Senior distance runner Futsum Zienasellassie and sophomore diver Tanya Kurach were among the big winners at Monday night's Fourth Annual Louie's Awards hosted by the Northern Arizona Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Zienasellassie and Kurach were named the Male and Female Athletes of the Year respectively at the end-of-year awards show at NAU's Prochnow Auditorium.
OGDEN, Utah – The Big Sky Conference office announced the Big Sky Winter All-Academic team on Thursday with 34 Northern Arizona student-athletes from men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s indoor track & field being honored for their work in the classroom and in competition.
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona head men’s basketball coach Jack Murphy has signed a pair of Chicago players to a National Letter of Intent, Murphy announced today. The duo of Carlos Hines and Lenell Henry are the first-two players in the Lumberjacks Signing Class of 2017.
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona football senior Patrick Baldenegro and women’s basketball senior Rene Coggins were honored as the Golden Eagle Scholar Athletes of the Year on Tuesday during the 39th annual Golden Eagle Awards luncheon. A total of 190 student-athletes across all 15 of NAU’s athletic programs were honored at the High Country Conference Center.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Head Coach Jack Murphy and the Northern Arizona men’s basketball team wrapped up the 2016-17 season. The Lumberjacks improved on their record from the year prior with four more wins and finished their season in the first round of the Big Sky Tournament. NAU closed out the season with an overall record of 9-23 and a conference record of 6-12.
RENO, Nev. – Northern Arizona led by one point with 7:24 to go in Reno. From there, Portland State pressed the Lumberjacks and forced turnovers in the final minutes to top NAU, 80-67 in the first round of the Big Sky Tournament being held at the Reno Events Center.

The Lumberjacks had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but a very long 3-point attempt by Kye de Laveaga was blocked by the Vandals, and Idaho escaped with the 77-75 victory.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – With fans on the edge of their seats and The Nest so loud you could not hear the person next to you, Northern Arizona took it to Sacramento State and came away with the 73-69 victory. The four-point win is the first Big Sky road victory for the Lumberjacks this season who improve to 8-20, 5-10 BSC.

CEDAR CITY, Utah – Northern Arizona’s seniors produced on offense, but the lack of bench support halted the Lumberjacks on the road as it fell to Southern Utah, 84-68. The Thunderbirds snapped an 11-game losing streak after converting points off turnovers.

Former Northern Arizona guard Quinton Upshur is finding success playing overseas. Upshur has most recently found a home with BC Luelea of Sweden, helping his squad to a current first-place ranking in the latest standings with an 18-4 overall record.

POCATELLO, Idaho – Northern Arizona led by as many as 20 points in the second half. Idaho State fought back late in the second period to force overtime and come away with the 91-90 win at Reed Gym. Senior forward Jordyn Martin started the game 5-for-5 from the field to finish with 21 points and 10 rebounds, as Northern Arizona (6-17, 3-7 BSC) fell to Idaho State (4-17, 2-7 BSC).
