FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona head men's basketball coach Jack Murphy has signed a pair of Chicago players to a National Letter of Intent, Murphy announced today. The duo of Carlos Hines and Lenell Henry are the first-two players in the Lumberjacks Signing Class of 2017.
Hines, a 6-3 combo guard from North Lawndale College Prep in Chicago will be an incoming freshman for the Lumberjacks. North Lawndale finished 23-8 this past season. Hines scored a team-high 29 points for the North-West Team in the CPLBCA All-Star game. His stellar play during the season led to IHSA Boys Basketball All-State Class 3A/4A Fourth Team honors.
"We are so excited to add Carlos to our team, because he brings great skill, toughness and leadership," said Murphy. "Carlos comes from a great program at North Lawndale and they are about the right things, competing, playing together and carrying themselves with class. It will be fun to see Carlos develop into a great Lumberjack."
Henry, a 6-9 power forward from Morgan Park High School is the second of the two signees. He will arrive in Flagstaff after helping Morgan Park to a 26-6 overall record and a Class 3A state championship on his resume. In addition to a team title, Henry was named an IHSA Boys Basketball All-State Class 3A/4A Special Mention.
"Lenell is coming off a season in which he was instrumental in helping his team win a state championship," Murphy said. "He brings toughness and a desire to compete on every play. There is no question in my mind that Lenell will help to raise our level of competitiveness right away. He joins fellow Morgan Park alum Torry Johnson as a Lumberjack and we couldn't be more excited!"
Hines and Henry are the third and fourth players for Murphy from Chicago since his arrival in Flagstaff. Both players competed in the Chicago Public League this past season.
