Men’s Basketball Adds Sixth Signee to Class
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Ako Kaluna of West Ranch High School has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to attend Northern Arizona University to play basketball next fall, Head Coach Jack Murphy announced on Wednesday.
"Ako brings toughness, athleticism and size to the post and fills a need in this class that was missing up to this point," said Murphy. "He is a strong kid that is very skilled. He looks like the prototypical left tackle but he really loves the game of basketball."
Kaluna, who is 6'7" and 260 pounds, averaged 16.1 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.3 blocks per game last year for the co-Foothill League champion Wildcats. He earned All-Santa Clarita Valley and All-Foothill League honors last season and is considered the favorite to earn Santa Clarita Valley MVP honors this season.
"He wanted to be a Lumberjack and is sold on our vision," said Murphy.
Kaluna joins a 2012-13 class that includes guard Travis Meeker (Mesa Red Mountain HS), guard Christopher Miller (Greenway HS), forward Zachary Reynolds (Mt. Zion Academy/Gulf Coast CC), forward Terry Winn (Melrose HS) and guard Kris Yanku (Taft HS).
Kaluna has drawn interest from USC and UCLA for football and had an offer to play basketball at Hawaii.
