OGDEN, Utah – Men's basketball freshman DeWayne Russell was named the Co-Big Sky Conference Player of the Week for games played from Nov. 13-19 with Sacramento State's Dylan Garrity.
Russell, a 5-11 true freshman guard from Peoria, Ariz., scored a career-high 25 points as Northern Arizona snapped its 18-game losing streak with an 85-82 road win over UC Davis.
"DeWayne was unconscious in the first half," said Murphy after the game on the Lumberjack Radio Network. "He had 21 at the half and had 25 points for the game on only 12 shots. Do you know how difficult that is to do in a Division I basketball game? This is only his third game. He is a special player and is exactly who we thought he was when we recruited him."
Russell, who played at Peoria High School, made 8-of-12 shots from the floor, was 5-of-8 from 3-point range, and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line against the Aggies. He also had six assists, four rebounds and two steals.
In three games, Russell, The Arizona Republic's Big School (Divisions I-II) Boys Basketball Player of the Year, leads the team with 18.7 scoring average while shooting 51.5 percent from the field, 56 percent from beyond the arc and perfect at the free throw line (13-for-13). He opened his career with a 15-point effort at Oregon and 16 points against No. 18 UNLV.
Garrity, a 6-2 sophomore point guard from Huntington Beach, Calif., averaged 20 points, six assists, and one steal per game as the Hornets picked up victories over Cal State Bakersfield and Utah. He shot 69.2 percent from the field, 62.5 percent from 3-point range, and 94.4 percent from the free-throw line.
Garrity scored a career-high 21 points in an 85-67 win over Cal State Bakersfield on Nov. 14. He also dished out seven assists, and went 11-of-12 from the free-throw line.
In a 74-71 win over Utah of the Pac-12 on Nov. 16, Garrity scored 19 points with five assists, and two steals. He scored 11 of his 19 points in the final 9:07 to spark a 29-13 run. He hit a jumper with 1:29 remaining in the game to give Sacramento State its first lead in 29 minutes of game clock.
