LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Northern Arizona men's basketball team travels to No. 18 UNLV Monday in the second game of a two-game road trip to start the season. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. from Thomas & Mack Arena.
The game will serve as a homecoming for new head coach Jack Murphy, who is from Las Vegas and played basketball at Durango High School. He is also the son-in-law of UNLV Athletic Director Jim Livengood.
"UNLV is going to be interesting," said Murphy. "It is where I found my love for basketball going to the UNLV games in the 1980s and 1990s. It is going to be an unbelievable moment in my life walking into that arena as a coach, let alone the head coach. I am excited to go back there. It will be a packed house since it is their season opener."
The Runnin' Rebels are ranked in the preseason for the first time since 1992-93 and the No. 18 ranking is the highest preseason ranking since being No. 1 in 1990-91. UNLV returns six letter winners and two starters from a team that finished with a 26-9 overall record and played in the NCAA Tournament.
UNLV has won the last three meetings in the series and 10 of the last 11 meetings. NAU last defeated the Runnin' Rebels in 2003.
NAU opened the 2012-13 season Saturday with a 83-73 loss at Oregon.
The game can be heard on the Lumberjack Radio Network on 105.1 FM The Big Talker locally and online via the Big Talker website and mobile app.
