FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Redshirt freshman Gaellan Bewernick recorded his first double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead Northern Arizona to a 80-49 victory over Northern New Mexico Tuesday night at the Rolle Activity Center.
"I thought we played much better in the second half," said Head Coach Adras. "We out-rebounded them in the second half, their field goal percentage and the amount of turnovers we created. I think our defense really spurred on our offense."
The Lumberjacks recorded their ninth consecutive home win dating to last season and 34th straight victory over non-Division I competition. NAU (2-3) won its second consecutive game overall.
Bewernick, who had 12 rebounds in the first four games, grabbed 11 while scoring 14 points, tying for game-high honors with teammate James Douglas. Junior guard Stallon Saldivar added 11 points and eight assists in the contest.
"Gaellan was terrific tonight," said Adras. "He got that steal and dunk early. I thought he played consistent throughout the ball game, rebounding the ball and scoring around the basket. It is nice to see him getting better and better each game."
NAU shot 54 percent in the opening half. Northern New Mexico (0-12) hung tough for the first 13 minutes of the game, cutting the Lumberjack lead to 29-23 at the 6:31 mark. But NAU 16-4 run to end the half with five points from Saldivar and four each from Bewernick and Durrell Norman.
NAU held the Eagles to 29 percent in the second half and out-rebounded Northern New Mexico 27-12 over the final 20 minutes.
Norman finished with 10 points. Michael Dunn added eight points and six assists.
Mario Caetano and Daniel Molina each scored 10 points for the Eagles.
NAU goes on the road for the next three contests starting Saturday at Loyola Marymount before playing BYU in Prescott on Nov. 30 and traveling to Tucson to face Arizona on Dec. 3.
