Mens Basketball Avenges Loss, Defeats Calgary 80-63
Calgary, Alberta, CANADA – The Northern Arizona University men’s basketball team rebounded from its loss on Friday to post an 80-63 victory over the University of Calgary Saturday night. The Lumberjacks improved to 3-1 in the Battle of the Border.
“To lose by 24 last night and to come back and beat them by 17 in less than 24 hours, showed a lot of character tonight,” said Head Coach Mike Adras. “I'm really pleased with the toughness our kids played with tonight.”
After leading 35-29 at halftime, the Lumberjacks pulled away in the third quarter, out-scoring the Dinos 25-12. NAU shot 47 percent for the game while holding Calgary to 32 percent from the floor.
Cameron Jones and Eric Platt each scored 17 points to lead the Lumberjacks, while Danny Redmon scored 13 points and Austin Smith added 11 points. Shane Johannsen led the Lumberjacks with 12 rebounds.
“We just kept them off the glass, we did a good job of contesting shots,” said Adras. “They had to earn buckets. Last night we gave them way too many easy shots. Every point that they scored, all 63 tonight, were tough points. They had to earn those 63.”
The Lumberjacks (3-1) complete their Canadian trip on Sunday. The 2010 Battle of the Border closes Sunday morning when NAU plays its fifth game in as many days, taking on the Lethbridge Pronghorns at 9 a.m. in The Jack.
