Mens Basketball Improves to 2-0 on Canadian Trip; Defeats Concordia 117-66
Calgary, Alberta, CANADA – Senior Eric Platt led the Lumberjacks with 22 points en route to a 117-66 victory over Concordia as Northern Arizona improved to 2-0 in the Battle of the Border preseason event hosted by the University of Calgary.
“I'm so pleased with our guys,” said Head Coach Mike Adras. “We went out on nine hours of touring earlier today and for them to come back and play so well tonight was amazing. It helps to be able to play 12 guys and no one playing more than 23 minutes. We played hard and that's all I asked them to do tonight and they went out and did it and did it very, very well.”
Platt went 7-for-12 from the field for a game-high 22 points among six players in double figures for the Lumberjacks. Senior Cameron Jones added 18 points in 13 minutes, while sophomore Austin Smith had 15 points in 12 minutes. Luis Flores scored 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor and senior Shane Johannsen and sophomore Gabe Rogers each contributed 11 points.
“Luis got off to a great start making his first few shots and it's amazing how when you make shots it boosts your confidence,” said Adras. “He really played well tonight on both ends of the court.”
The Lumberjacks shot 61.9 percent from the floor, while hitting nine three-pointers and making 18-of-25 free throw attempts.
All 12 players scored in the game with 10 of the 12 recording at least one assist and 11 of the 12 getting at least one rebound in the game.
Concordia is coached by Paul Sir, the father of former Lumberjack standout Steve Sir. Brother Ethan Sir had eight points in the game. Concordia was led by Robbie Sihota, who scored 17 points in the contest.
The Lumberjacks play host Calgary each of the next two nights. Tipoff on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m. Arizona time. The game will be broadcast on the Lumberjack Radio Network on 105.1 FM The Big Talker in Flagstaff with pregame starting at 5:25 p.m.
