FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Senior Cameron Jones and sophomore Gabe Rogers each had 21 points as the Northern Arizona men's basketball team defeated Western New Mexico 96-86 Wednesday night at the Rolle Activity Center.
Jones went 8-for-15 from the floor, while Rogers connected on 7-off-11 shots with each player hitting four free throws. Junior Durrell Norman had 14 points and eight rebounds in his first action, while senior Eric Platt added 14.
The Lumberjacks shot 48 percent for the game and made 6-of-18 three-pointers and 26-of-32 attempts at the charity stripe.
Western New Mexico hung in the game with 13 three-pointers. Guard T.J. Riley had a game-high 26 points. Andy Sohlich and Brelan Berry both chipped in 12 points.
NAU led 53-41 at the half after building an early 17-point lead in the contest. The Lumberjacks led by as many as 19 in the second half before the Broncos cut the lead to eight points with 2:18 left in the game but they never got any closer.
NAU opens the 2010-11 campaign on Friday, Nov. 12 at Iowa State in the Global Sports Hy-Vee Challenge. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Flagstaff time.
