FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Three student-athletes have signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Northern Arizona University and play basketball in the fall of 2011, Head Coach Mike Adras announced Wednesday.
The Lumberjacks signed three high school perimeter players, including point guard James Douglas of Orange Lutheran High School in Orange, Calif., and wings Colin Gruber of Harbor High School in Santa Cruz, Calif., and Daniel Cheek of Corona Del Mar High School in Newport Beach, Calif.
“I consider this to be the best early signing class in my tenure,” said Mike Adras. “I think we signed three very talented young men who will be a great foundation to build on. All three have the ability to shoot the ball and fit our “Recruit to Shoot” motto. I think the fans of Flagstaff are going to fall in love with these three guys because of the excitement they will bring to the basketball team at NAU. They are also all terrific students and epitomize what we look for in student-athletes.”
Douglas (G, 6-0, 175) averaged 15.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 2009-10 for Orange Lutheran High School. He was rated as one of the Top 20 high school guards in the western United States by Gerry Freitas Hoop Review. He led his team to a 24-10 record, advancing to the CIF Southern Section Championship and State Tournament. He is a three-time All-Trinity League selection (2008-10) and a two-time All-CIF choice (2009-10). He currently ranks as the fourth leading scorer in his school’s history, while listed among the top 10 in the school’s history in career assists, steals and 3-point shots made. He is a three-year varsity starter who also participated in football and track and field. He was also recruited by Montana State, Northridge, UC-Irvine, UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara.
“James can do so many things,” said Adras. “He can handle the ball and distribute it and he jumps out of the building for a little guy.”
Gruber (G, 6-3, 173) averaged 20.7 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 3.6 steals for Harbor High School. He has excellent three-point range and has been rated one of the top 25 high school shooters in the western United States. He was an All-Santa Cruz County selection and Co-MVP of the Santa Cruz Athletic League.
“Colin is one of the top three shooting guards we saw all summer,” said Adras. “He is also a terrific passer. He has a good understanding of the game of basketball.”
