OGDEN, Utah - Northern Arizona's Cameron Jones has been selected as the Big Sky Conference men's basketball player of the week after leading the Lumberjacks to a split of conference games.
"It is a pretty big complement to win the Big Sky Player of the Week," said Jones. "I have never seen a player win whose team lost during the week. It is a great accomplishment."
Jones, a 6-foot- 4 senior guard from Los Angeles, averaged 31.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game as Northern Arizona beat Idaho State 82-80 in overtime, and lost 68-67 to Weber State.
Jones scored a career-high 37 points and tied a career-high with eight rebounds in Northern Arizona's win on Thursday over Idaho State. Jones made 12-of-23 shots from the field, was 3-of-3 from 3-point range, and 10-of-14 from the free-throw line. He also had four assists and a steal. Jones hit a free throw with 35 seconds left to give NAU an 81-80 lead, and added another free throw with 10 seconds left.
"The big part about the game against Idaho State is we won the game," said Jones. "I have had a couple of career-high games and we lost. It was a much needed win at home and I am happy we got the win."
The 37 points tied the sixth-best single-game performance in school history.
Jones followed with 26 points, three rebounds, and one assist in a 68-67 loss on Saturday to Weber State. He was 10-of-19 from the field, 2-of-3 from 3-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
In the two games, the all-conference guard shot 52.4 percent from the floor, 83.3 percent from 3-point range, and 77.8 percent from the free-throw line.
This is his third career player of the week honor.
NAU stays home this week to host Sacramento State on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. at the Rolle Activity Center.
"We have to get these home games," said Jones. "It is our goal to win over game."
