FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The
Northern Arizona men’s basketball team returns to action on
Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Big Sky Game of the Week against Sacramento
State. The game will be carried by Altitude, Comcast Sports Net
Northwest and Comcast California.
The Lumberjacks are coming off a sensational shooting performance
last Sunday against Portland State.
NAU enjoyed one of the best shooting performances in Big Sky
Conference history on Jan. 17 as the Lumberjacks upset Portland
State 93-86. NAU connected on 71.7 percent of its field goals
(33-of-46). Since 1980, it’s believed to be the fourth-best
shooting performance by a Big Sky team, and the second-best in a
conference game.
Idaho shot 71.9 percent during a 1982 game against Boise State.
Against the Vikings, NAU shot 68 percent in the first half (17-25)
to build a 39-28 lead. The Lumberjacks were even better in the
second half, making 76.2 percent from the field (16-21). NAU
finished the game 7-of-10 from 3-point range, and also made
20-of-27 free throws (74.1 percent). The effort was the best in a
Division I game this season. Savannah State shot 70 percent from
the floor against Central Connecticut State on Jan. 11.
Gabe Rogers was 5-for-5 from the field. Shane Johannsen came off
the bench to make 8-of-9 field-goal tries, and junior guard Cameron
Jones was 9-of-13. It marked just the third time since 1987 that a
Big Sky team has shot 70 percent from the field. Portland State
accomplished the feat on Feb. 28, 2008 at Montana State making
35-of-50 (70 percent). Northern Arizona made 70.2 percent of its
shots in a 2004 victory over Willamette. Northern Arizona holds the
Big Sky record for field-goal percentage in a game, converting 74.2
percent (46-63) in a 1984 win over Adams State.
NAU has won five of the last seven games and has nine wins in 18
games so far this season, surpassing the win total from the 2008-09
season.
The game can also be heard on the Lumberjack Radio Network and
seen on Big Sky Television.
