FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona Head Coach Jerome Souers has announced the addition of 30 new Lumberjacks this afternoon on National Signing Day. Out of the group, 27 of those players signed National Letters of Intent, while another three have signed financial aid agreements with NAU and have joined the team this spring.
"The NAU Football staff is extremely excited about the 2017 class," Souers said. "We continue to make recruiting in Arizona our top priority and this year isn't any different. We were able to have some of the most talented athletes in not only Arizona, but California as well, commit to the Lumberjack Family and the staff couldn't be more excited about the direction of where our program is going."
The class includes 10 Arizona products and 14 from the state of California. With multiple state champions and All-State players on the signing list, the Lumberjacks filled a huge void on defense, in addition to adding two quarterbacks to throw to NAU's heavily talented wide receiving unit.
"The NAU administration continues to provide us with the necessary resources to go out and recruit against the top schools in the FCS," said Souers. "We can't wait to see what 2017 brings and it all starts in the coming weeks when we begin spring ball."
The Lumberjacks open their 2017 schedule on the road at Arizona on Sept. 2. Prior to that, fans can catch a sneak peek of the Lumberjacks at their annual spring game on April 22.
This year's class includes nine early enrollees already attending classes at Northern Arizona. The signee list includes defensive lineman Aaron Andrews (Chabot College), wide receiver Jaeren Burch (Phoenix College), safety Joshua Clarke (College of San Mateo), defensive lineman Brandon Lawless (L.A. Valley/West Virginia), defensive tackle Spencer Lewis (Phoenix College), safety Elijah Orr (College of San Mateo), safety Anthony Sweeney (De La Salle HS), defensive lineman Hamilton To'o (College of San Mateo), and Cory Young (Boise State).

Head Coach Jerome Souers Quotes
On the Arizona recruiting class…
"I know that our staff is extremely excited about this 2017 class. We identified some positions of need and there is no doubt in our mind that we were able to find some outstanding student-athletes in those positions. Our priority is always going to be recruiting the state of Arizona and I think we have proven, once again, that a lot of the very best Arizona has to offer ends up with a Lumberjack jersey on. There are numerous signees that participated and won State Championships in Arizona this past season."
On the California recruiting class…
"Our staff was able to identify some truly special players from the state of California that really rounded our class out to be one of the deepest we've ever had. The number of All-State players that we have added is phenomenal and we truly believe that a lot of these signees will provide an instant impact for us next season."
