  • Baldenegro and Coggins Named Big Sky Scholar-Athletes of the Year

    OGDEN, Utah – The Big Sky Conference announced its 2016-17 Scholar-Athlete Award winners today with football’s Patrick Baldenegro and women’s basketball’s Rene Coggins picking up the top honors for Northern Arizona. The duo was also named the Golden Eagle Scholar-Athletes of the Year earlier this semester.
  • NAU Sweeps Big Sky All-Sports Awards for Fourth Time in School History

    OGDEN, Utah – For the second time in four years, and the fourth time in school history, the Northern Arizona University Athletics Department swept the Big Sky Men's and Women's All-Sports Trophies, announced by the conference office on Monday. The Lumberjacks won a total of seven Big Sky Conference championships during the 2016-17 academic year and also received strong performances from several other programs.
  • NAU Graduates 44 Student-Athletes During Spring Commencement Ceremonies

    FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Among the nearly 5,000 Northern Arizona University graduates this weekend will be 44 Lumberjack student-athletes, who will receive their diplomas during the commencement ceremonies Friday and Saturday in the Walkup Skydome. Along with the 17 fall semester graduates, NAU Athletics will graduate 61 total student-athletes this academic year.

    Patrick Baldenegro, a native of Chandler, Ariz., will walk across the commencement stage next week with a degree in biomedical science. He's a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, four-time Golden Eagle Scholar Award winner and three-time Big Sky Fall All-Academic Team member.

    FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Senior distance runner Futsum Zienasellassie and sophomore diver Tanya Kurach were among the big winners at Monday night's Fourth Annual Louie's Awards hosted by the Northern Arizona Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Zienasellassie and Kurach were named the Male and Female Athletes of the Year respectively at the end-of-year awards show at NAU's Prochnow Auditorium.

    FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona football senior Patrick Baldenegro and women’s basketball senior Rene Coggins were honored as the Golden Eagle Scholar Athletes of the Year on Tuesday during the 39th annual Golden Eagle Awards luncheon. A total of 190 student-athletes across all 15 of NAU’s athletic programs were honored at the High Country Conference Center.

    FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona’s Patrick Baldenegro has been named the National Football Foundation Valley of the Sun 2017 FCS College Scholar Athlete of the Year. Baldenegro, along with the other college honorees and 50 of the top high school football-student athletes from northern and central Arizona, will be honored on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at the Hilton-Scottsdale Resort and Villas, Scottsdale, Ariz., at the chapter’s 36th Annual NFF/Fiesta Bowl Scholar Athlete Awards Banquet.

    FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona (5-6, 4-4 BSC) fell to Southern Utah (6-5, 5-3) today in the HintonBurdick Grand Canyon Trophy game, 48-21. The Thunderbirds jumped out to a 14-0 lead, NAU fought back to tie it up before heading into halftime, but the Thunderbirds outscored the Lumberjacks on Senior Day to come away with the victory at the Walkup Skydome.
