Freshman quarterback Case Cookus continues to ring in the accolades, as he was chosen as the fifth recipient of the Jerry Rice FCS Award presented by Mickey Charles LLC.
The awards program has provided coverage for the Football Championship Subdivision for 29 years and was founded by Charles and The Sports Network. In the summer of 2015, The Sports Network ceased operation and the awards are now solely done by Mickey Charles LLC.
The award comes just a few weeks before Cookus will be honored as the STATS National Freshman of the Year at the FCS awards banquet in January. STATS took over in 2015 as the primary coverage provider for FCS football nationally.
Cookus had one of the best freshman campaigns in FCS history. He broke the long-standing FCS record for the most touchdown passes by a freshman. The previous record was 31 touchdown passes set in 2004. Cookus tallied 37 touchdown passes leading not only all FCS freshmen, but also all of the quarterbacks in the nation. He had the lowest amount of interceptions by any quarterback with 3,000 or more passing yards and led the nation in completion percentage for the majority of the season.
Cookus broke the NAU season records for touchdown passes, completion percentage, and yards per pass attempt
Cookus is only the second quarterback to earn the award and first since Villanova's John Robertson in 2012.
The Thousand Oaks, Calif. native has earned National Freshman of the Year honors from FCS Awards, STATS LLC, and College Sports Madness. Cookus has earned All-America honors from the STATS, Associated Press, Walter Camp Football Foundation, and College Sports Madness.
From FCS Awards
He is considered by many as possibly the best to ever don a uniform in the NFL. Even a more inclusive acknowledgment as "one of the best" places Jerry Rice among the elite of the game. So, what better name to have for an award to recognize the outstanding freshman in the FCS than that of Jerry Rice who has achieved status as a living legend? The player within the FCS that is the acceptor of the Jerry Rice Award is Case Cookus of Northern Arizona University, an athlete with outstanding achievements in his first year at the collegiate level. Promise has been shown, and acknowledged, the goals are in place and a deserving freshman of the Rice Award has been found.
