(STATS) – A trio of Northern Arizona football players were named to the STATS FCS All-America teams today, announced by the organization. Leading the way was sophomore wide receiver Emmanuel Butler and senior punter Ryan Hawkins; both named to their respective second team. Freshman Case Cookus was named the third-team quarterback.
Butler, an in-state product from Phoenix, Ariz., went from 235 receiving yards last season to 1,208 yards in 2015 to pick up second team All-America honors. Butler set a new NAU season receiving yards record en route to tying a school record 15 touchdown receptions. He ranked amongst the top in the nation in scoring and receiving yards per catch all season leading NAU in both categories.
Hawkins received second team honors after ranking in the top two in the nation all season in yards per punt. The Peoria, Ariz. native registered 52 punts for 2,406 yards at 46.3 yards per boot. Hawkins had a season-long punt of 71 yards, while 17 sailed for 50 or more yards.
Cookus, the STATS FCS Freshman of the Year, was selected to the third team. Cookus finished fifth in the national offensive player of the year voting. The Thousand Oaks, Calif. native led NAU to a 7-4 overall record and three wins over Top 25 teams. He set a new NAU record and FCS freshman mark for passing touchdowns in a season (37). Cookus also broke the NAU season records for completion percentage and yards per pass attempt.
All three players received the first All-America honors of their career last week when College Sports Madness released its list.
