OGDEN, Utah - For the second straight week, Northern Arizona punter/kicker Ryan Hawkins had been named the ROOT Sports Big Sky Special Teams Player of the Week. This is Hawkins fifth honor of his career.
Hawkins help lead the lumberjacks to a 52–30 win over No. 4 Eastern Washington on the road. NAU never trailed in the game and snapped a six-game winning streak for the Eagles, handing them their first conference loss of the season.
Battling winds of 13mph, Hawkins kept his composure making sure to leave the game with an imprint. NAU had to punt just twice in the game, but Hawkins booted it for an average of 36.0 yards when called upon. In the third quarter, his 21-yard field goal extended NAU's lead to 24-14 right before the half.
Hawkins connected on all nine PATs, but it was during kickoffs where he really excelled on Saturday. After NAU had just returned an interception for a touchdown, it was his turn to do the kickoff. He booted the ball 65 yards to EWU's Simba Webster, who returned it for 20 yards before fumbling the ball. Out of all the players on the field, Hawkins sprinted down the field and managed to come away with the fumble recovery at the EWU25 yard line; the first of his career. In total, Hawkins had nine kickoffs for an average of 58.3 yards and four touchbacks.
