DAVIS, Calif. – After entering halftime with the game tied at 17-All, Northern Arizona (3-3, 1-2 BSC) was unable to score in the second half as it fell to UC Davis (1-5, 1-2 BSC) on the road, 38-24, at Aggie Stadium.
"We didn't do our job by losing on the road today," said head coach Jerome Souers. "There are a lot of things we need to prepare for (during the bye week), including run defense and more execution on offense. All-in-all we have to have both sides of the ball working at the same time."
The win gave UCD its first victory of the season and the program's 500th as it put up the most points by the squad this season.
UCD had a chance to score first with a 46-yard field goal attempt with 9:44 to go in the first quarter, but it was short. That gave NAU the ball back and it made its way down the field rather quickly. Casey Jahn found the end zone on a two-yard attempt so he thought, but after a review of the play, he was called down at the one-yard line. It didn't deter the 'Jacks as they went for it on fourth-and-one with Case Cookus finding RJ Rickert for the one-yard score.
The Aggies tied the game at 7-All with a one-yard rush through the line, snapping a two-quarter scoring drought dating back to last game. Three minutes later, UCD took advantage of an NAU fumble, which led to 51-yard touchdown pass on the next play. It gave the Aggies a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Ryan Hawkins improved to 7-of-7 on field goal attempts this season when he connected on a 35-yard attempt to kick off the scoring in the second quarter.
The Aggies were able to add a field goal of their own with 51 seconds left in the second quarter after a Brady Stuart 38-yarder.
At the end of the first half, NAU had out-gained UCD in yards by eight, but the score was tied at the half after a 23-yard touchdown catch by Emmanuel Butler with 12 seconds to go in the second quarter.
UCD used almost four minutes off the clock in their opening drive of the second half to take back the lead after a three-yard touchdown reception by Chris Martin.
The fourth quarter saw UCD grab its largest lead of the game just under the eight-minute mark, to take a 38-17 lead. The 'Jacks were able to put up some points in the fourth as Cookus found Rickert late in the game, but by then there wasn't enough time for NAU to form a comeback.
The win clipped a six-game losing streak for the Aggies as they garnered their first victory of the season. UCD converted 50 percent of its third downs, but it was ultimately its clock management that helped put the game in its favor. The Aggies controlled the clock 40:42 to 19:18.
Butler registered his fourth 100-yard game of the season finishing with 110 yards on seven catches with one touchdown. Jahn registered 111 yards on 19 carries. It's the second time this season Butler and Jahn have recorded 100 yards in the same game.
The Lumberjacks have a bye next week, and will return to the field on Oct. 24 when it hosts Weber State on Homecoming.
