OGDEN, Utah – Northern Arizona sophomore wide receiver Emmanuel Butler was named Co-Big Sky ROOT Sports Offensive Player of the Week, announced today by the conference office. The honor is the first of Butler's career. Eastern Washington's Cooper Kupp shared the honor with Butler.
Butler, a native of Phoenix, Ariz., had a career night from start to finish as NAU defeated No. 24 Stephen F. Austin 34-28 on the road. It took two minutes for Butler to make his first catch of the game and it came in thrilling fashion, as he rolled right past the SFA defense and into the end zone with a 57-yard touchdown catch. Twenty seconds into the second quarter, Butler's second catch was a 47-yard touchdown, turning his first-two catches into scores. By halftime, Butler had three catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns.
Butler didn't score in the third, but made up for it in the fourth with a 36-yard touchdown catch from wide receiver Alex Holmes on the switch. Butler finished 30 yards shy of breaking the 36-year old school record for single game receiving yards (245). His 216 yards was a new career high, almost totaling his yards from a year ago. Butler averaged 15 more yards per catch than any other receiver in the league this past week and did so with half the amount of catches.
