FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Next Saturday, the Northern Arizona football team will open up its season on the road at Stephen F. Austin. With their eye on the start of the season, the Lumberjacks held their final scrimmage of fall camp today at the Walkup Skydome.
"We featured most of our younger players today; a lot of the freshmen and transfers that played with heart and passion," said head coach Jerome Souers. "We wanted to keep our older players out today. The older guys are on track and look good. There are also a few true freshmen that look good and can contribute this season."
The 'Jacks have six more practices scheduled before its trip to Nacogdoches, Texas. If there are any kinks left to iron out, now's the time for the 'Jacks. NAU's offense has been looking good all camp, and with the return of redshirt seniors RJ Rickert and Dejzon Walker, the unit got that much better, if possible.
"Everyone on the offense is in the best shape of their lives," said Rickert. "We're ready to run an up-tempo offense, be explosive on the outside and run the ball when we need to. I think overall this was a successful camp and the offense is ready for game one," said Rickert.
As for the defense, the leadership of senior Marcus Alford is still very much present. The cornerback has become a very vocal leader during camp, as he has had to help a young unit mature very quickly on the field.
"There's been a lot of weight on my shoulders as an individual and as a team leader," Alford said. "We have some young guys in the secondary, but we don't consider them inexperienced because of how much work we've been putting in in camp. They have come in and performed well and that makes me proud."
The Lumberjacks will practice tomorrow at 9 a.m., Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 9:30 a.m. NAU will go back to its regular practice schedule of 4-6 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday beginning next week.
