FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Michael DeGroote, a member of the Northern Arizona football team was killed on Tuesday in an accident in Alaska while on family vacation, as confirmed by a family spokesperson.
"The entire NAU Athletics Family is deeply saddened by the loss of Michael," said head coach Jerome Souers. "He was a well-respected young man that I was proud to have as a part of our program. Our time with Michael was cut short, but he will always be a Lumberjack. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family."
A native of Scottsdale, Ariz. and a graduate of Fountain Hills High School, DeGroote was entering his senior season as a tight end/fullback on the football team. DeGroote had been with the Lumberjacks since 2013 after transferring from Scottsdale Community College.
Funeral services for Michael DeGroote will be held on Saturday, July 11 at 11 a.m. at Christ's Church of Fountain Hills.
