FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona football team will host South Dakota on Saturday, Sept. 17 in its home opener. Kickoff at the Walkup Skydome is set for 4 p.m.
The Lumberjacks are ranked No. 22 in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision coaches poll and No. 25 in the The Sports Network media poll after a pair of games.
Saturday's game will be broadcast live on KBTK 105.1 FM and www.BigTalkerRadio.com. Mitch Strohman will be providing play-by-play and Kevin Stephens will be doing color commentary. The game can also be viewed on www.WatchBigSky.com. Live stats are available on www.NAUAthletics.com.
NAU looks to win its second straight game after coming away with a 21-10 victory on the road at UC Davis last weekend. The Lumberjacks trailed by three points in the fourth quarter before senior safety Lucky Dozier recorded a pick-six to score the game-winning touchdown.
This year's first Fanfest will open at 12 p.m. and will run until the 4 p.m. kickoff. Food will be available from the NAU WTF Truck and beer will be provided by Coors Light including Coors Light, Miller Lite and Blue Moon selections. Fanfest will also include two video game trailers, a rock climbing wall, college football viewing on the video screen, the NAU bounce house, face painting and much more.
NAU Athletics also has two ticket promotions for the home opener to invite all youth in the community out to cheer on the Lumberjacks on Saturday. First, all youth football players and cheerleaders who wear their team jersey or cheer outfit will receive $5 admission to the game as part of Youth Football and Cheer Day. All high school varsity and JV teams also have the opportunity to receive free admission for their entire team as part of High School Football Team Day. Lumberjacks in the Polls
Coming off a road win at UC Davis, the Northern Arizona football team is ranked 25th in The Sports Network FCS Top 25, while the FCS Coaches' Poll had the Lumberjacks tied for 22nd. College Sports Madness had NAU in the 20th spot.
• Both teams have a 1-1 overall record.
• Both teams' wins are over UC Davis.
• Former USD Head Coach "Smokin" Joe Salem left the Coyotes after nine years and a 51-39-2 record to become the Head Coach of NAU in 1975.
• Salem coached at NAU for four years and compiled a 26-17 overall record.
• Zach Bauman became NAU's all-time leading rusher at UC Davis. He enters Saturday's game with 3,803 career yards.
• Lucky Dozier's 78-yard interception return at UC Davis is the longest in the Big Sky this season.
• The Lumberjacks rank in the top 25 for the third consecutive week.
• Head Coach Jerome Souers is tied for second overall on the Big Sky career coaching wins chart with 85.
Running of the Freshmen
Be a part of the tradition for the first NAU home football game with the annual Running of the Freshmen. All freshmen students will lead the team out on the field when the Lumberjacks take on South Dakota.
South Dakota head coach Joe Glenn is 2-11 in two seasons at the helm of the South Dakota football program. The Coyotes began the season with a 10-7 victory over UC Davis at home, but fell in its second game of the season on the road at Kansas (31-14). USD has 158 passing yards and 414 rushing yards total after its first two games. Josh Vander Maten has been the starting QB for the Coyotes the last two games. Vander Maten has completed 17-of-35 passes and has thrown one interception. He's thrown one TD this season and has 158 yards passing. Vander Maten has scored all three touchdowns for USD this season (one passing and two rushing). Trevor Bouma is the leading rusher for the Coyotes. He has totaled 147 yards on 27 carries. Terrance Terry is the top receiver for USD after totaling 58 yards on six catches. The Coyotes are 1-for-2 on made field goal attempts this season.
