FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Senior fullback Jake Hess and sophomore linebacker Austin Hasquet were both named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All‐District® 8 Football Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Northern Arizona was among five schools in the district to place two or more players on the team, including Arizona, Eastern Washington, Portland State and San Diego. The Lumberjacks are represented on the Capital One Academic All‐District ® team for third consecutive year.

Hess, who is in his second year at NAU after transferring from Boise State, has started seven games this season at fullback. A native of Reno, Nev., Hess was a 2011 All-Big Sky second-team selection and Big Sky All-Academic choice. He was named the Outstanding Junior of the Year on offense at the team banquet after seeing action in 10 games with one start. He was a semifinalist for the 2012 William V. Campbell Trophy earlier this fall, an award that recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation. He is majoring in psychology and has a 3.55 grade point average. He is scheduled to graduate in May.

"It is really important and Coach Souers really emphasizes working hard in the classroom and on the field," said Hess. "I always take pride in my grades and it feels good."

Hasquet, who is from Peoria and played at Liberty High School, is second on the team in tackles with 50 in nine games with eight starts this season. He was a 2012 Golden Eagle Scholar-Athlete recipient and 2011 Big Sky All-Academic selection. He has a 4.00 grade point average and is majoring in biomedical science.

"It means a lot," said Hess. "I work hard in the classroom. My parents have always told me to keep my grades up. To be recognized for this award is very humbling."

First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month. District 8 includes schools in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Canada.

The Academic All‐District ® teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.

Kickoff is still set for 2:05 p.m. on Saturday against Southern Utah in the Walkup Skydome. Tickets can be bought by calling the Central Ticket Office at 928-523-5661 or by purchasing them online.
