FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Nothing would make the alumni returning to Flagstaff this weekend for the 88th Homecoming happier than a victory over UC Davis. On Saturday, the Lumberjacks host the Aggies in the first meeting between the schools in school history, looking to extend a winning streak dating back to the second game of the season.
Kickoff is set for 4:07 p.m. on Saturday with the Lumberjack Fan Fest opening at Noon.
"The team has been playing very well and I think they are fun to watch," said Head Coach Jerome Souers. "It is exciting football right now."
NAU (5-1, 3-0) is coming off a 45-38 win at North Dakota in its first ever meeting in Grand Forks against the new Big Sky opponent. The Lumberjacks have won five consecutive games for the first time since the 2008 season and are one of three Big Sky teams still undefeated in league play.
NAU is 50-34-2 all-time in Homecoming Games but have lost the last two and four of the last five overall. The Lumberjacks have defeated both Montana and North Dakota on their Homecoming games this season.
UC Davis (3-4, 2-2) outlasted Idaho State 52-45 last week, posting 640 yards of total offense. Quarterback Randy Wright was named the ROOT SPORTS Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week after his 300-yard, three touchdown effort against the Bengals.
"It is important to start early in any game you play," said Souers. "We intend to come out and play like we did last week and get after our opponent. Football is a long game and you have to maintain your energy and focus throughout the game. Being at home makes that easier."
NAU opened the game last week with two early scores but still needed a comeback in the second half. Three of the four wins this season have been via comebacks in the second half. NAU trailed by seven twice against UND in the second half and was down 24-14 at Montana and 14-0 at UNLV before posting comebacks in the second half.
"Davis has an excellent defensive line and their linebacker group is outstanding," said Souers. "They are going to fit to the run better than anybody we have seen out of the 4-3 they run. Their secondary is very versatile and disguise well. It will be a very balanced defense."
