Former Lumberjack Duo Berry and Poindexter Sign with San Jose SaberCats
SAN JOSE, Calif. – Former Lumberjacks Ed Berry and Kris Poindexter signed with the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League Wednesday.
Berry, a 5-9, 185-pound native of San Mateo, California, made 120 receptions for 1,716 yards and seven touchdowns in two seasons at Northern Arizona. He was an Sports Network All-America and All-Big Sky selection in 2009 after leading the team with 75 catches for 1,075 yards and seven touchdowns. The 75 receptions were third-best total in school history, while 1,075 receiving yards ranked as the fifth-best single-season total. He ranked second in the conference and tied for 16th in the nation in catches per game (6.8) in 2009 and second in the Big Sky and tied for sixth in the nation in receiving yards per game (97.7).
Berry was in camp with the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the Canadian Football League last summer.
Poindexter, a 6-2, 295-pount native of Phoenix and Westview Hgh School standout, played four seasons at NAU. He started all four seasons, making 38 career starts. He was a two-time All-Big Sky Conference selection, including first-team honors in 2010.
The ArenaBowl XVI, XVIII and XXI Champion, San Jose SaberCats open the 2011 season against the defending ArenaBowl Champion Spokane Shock on March 11 as they return to the Arena Football League for their 15th season starting in 2011.
Berry and Poindexter join former student-athlete Ryne Holstrom in the AFL. He signed with the Philadelphia Soul last month. The two teams meet in San Jose on April 23. The Sabercats will play the Arizona Rattlers in Phoenix on June 18.
