FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Taking advantage of a sunny afternoon at NAU's Upper Fields, the Lumberjack football team looked strong in its final scrimmage of spring ball Saturday as it prepares for the nationally-televised 2013 Blue & Gold Spring Game coming up on April 27 in Lumberjack Stadium.
"We have a good football team," head coach Jerome Souers said. "There are a lot of talented players on this squad, and even though we have a few injuries and whatnot, we're going to put on a good show."
At Saturday's scrimmage, NAU enjoyed the return of star running back Zach Bauman, who had been out with an injury until this week, and showcased its progression at a number of other position groups to a crowd of over 100 onlookers.
"Our cornerbacks, safeties, and linebackers in particular are playing really well right now," Souers said. "From a coverage standpoint they look really solid, and our defensive line continues to get pressure on the quarterback and is making things tough for the offense."
Despite an injury-depleted offensive line group, Souers says that his group of young blockers are also progressing remarkably well despite the adversity.
"I'll be honest, as young as this offensive line is, they've really gotten better," Souers said. "They have a great work ethic, considering just six healthy guys are working through five positions, and even though it's wearing them out a little bit they're doing a great job."
As the Lumberjacks continue to get better throughout the final week of spring ball, NAU fans can expect a good showing next Saturday at Lumberjack Stadium.
"This is great exposure for the program," said Bauman, who enters the 2013 fall season 118 yards shy of NAU's career rushing record. "We'll be able to show the nation what we can do, how we've built off of last season, and what they have to look forward to for this fall."
The 2013 Blue & Gold Spring Football Game will be televised by FOX Sports Arizona at 2:30 p.m. next Saturday with the Voice of the Lumberjacks Mitch Strohman and former NAU quarterback Kevin Stephens calling the action.
