Case Cookus' first year at NAU was so dominant, that he not only received NAU's Male Newcomer of the Year award but he trumped all and also was voted the Male Athlete of the Year. The freshman quarterback shined in his debut season collecting a host of awards and All-American honors. In all, he was named an All-American by five outlets (STATS, Associated Press, Walter Camp Football Foundation, College Sporting News and College Sports Madness) and National Freshman of the Year by three outlets (FCS Awards, STATS LLC, Mickey Charles LLC. (Jerry Rice Award), and College Sports Madness). In addition, Cookus became the second player ever to receive the CFPA's National Performer of the Year, National Freshman Performer of the Year and Quarterback Award in the same season. He broke NAU season records for touchdown passes, completion percentage and yards per attempt and led all FCS players with 37 touchdowns to break the FCS record for touchdown passes by a freshman.
